Another Day at Work
Back to Work Tomorrow
A new Nais series on workplace appreciation
Why is appreciation still so hard?
In many companies, no one really appreciates anyone. Not because we don’t want to – but because we are still ruled by the ghosts of the past:
- The Manor Ghost – “You’re here to work, not to complain. You’ll be appreciated… once you leave.”
- The Distrust Ghost – “If they praise you, they must want something.”
- The Complaining Ghost – “There’s nothing to be happy about. Something will go wrong anyway.”
The Four Horsemen of Organizational Apocalypse
And when we finally try to change things, they appear:
- Silence by choice – no psychological safety, so silence becomes survival.
- Sweet contempt – praise that wounds more than it lifts.
- Assembly-line appreciation – the same for everyone, one-size-fits-all.
- One and done – a nice campaign, then back to business as usual.
But it doesn’t have to be this way
Appreciation doesn’t need to be a one-off campaign. It can be a daily practice – simple, genuine, and a natural part of teamwork.
A culture where we can say: “I see you. What you do matters.”
